Mrs Hemmings, who has three generation of children passing through the doors of the school, was commenting on a recent donation of literary materials to the school by representatives of Advantage General Insurance Company Limited.
The donation was the first in the Company's literacy programme, which forms part of its corporate social responsbility thrust. The donation was made possible through the direct influence of Senior Branch Manager, Margaret Harvey Williams who sought and obtained educational items from Dr Rita Cox who resides in Toronto, Canada.
"We have never got anything like this before. We have never seen people come into us from the outside. We always see it on the television and read it in the papers where other schools benefit from companies and wish that we could also benefit...we're so happy and thankful to Advantage General Insurance Company. I know whatever you will do for us will go a far way in enhancing the teaching staff and the children," Mrs Hemmings stated.
Bethaphil Basic caters to approximately 45 students and is a feeder school for the Goodwill and Adelphi all-age schools within the Chatham community
The representatives from Advantage General also presented similar items to the Sudbury Basic School in Sudbury, an adjoining community to Chatham.
The school houses 27 students and was in dire need of the materials. Principal of the school, Carlene Dawkins expressed appreciation on behalf of the teaching staff and students.
"Our school is growing but we need a whole lot of help," Mrs Dawkins said, noting that the enrollment number is a bit on the low side with just 27 students.
On Thursday, the Advantage team made their way over to Ocho Rios, St. Ann where they also made a presentation to the Ferngrove Basic School, which Dr Cox has been supporting for many years.
Advantage General Insurance Company is the number one motor shop with 11 locations islandwide.
